Toona Essential Oils (TEO) was established in 1990 when Rosemary Cullen-Archer and Dennis Archer bought `Toona', a 100 acre property east of Gympie in the south east of Queensland, Australia, and commenced growing Australian native trees for essential oil production.

After the obligatory conversion period, the farm, trees and distillation equipment for the production of essential oils were certified Organic A by the Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA).

Based on the first hand experiences of

1. establishing the first commercial plantation of the Australian native tree, Backhousia citriodora, Lemon scented Myrtle,

2. producing the first commercial quantities of Bc essential oil, and

3. marketing the leaf and oil to Australia and the world,

in 2004, Dennis wrote and published the technical monograph:

'Backhousia citriodora F.Muell, Lemon Scented Myrtle, biology, cultivation and exploitation'.

Backhousia citriodora, now known as Lemon Myrtle, is regarded as the world's purest natural source of citral, a potent antimicrobial in topical applications.  Research detailed in the monograph shows that Backhousia citriodora is even more effective than citral as an antimicrobial. 'Toona' was sold in 2002. Since that time, the principals have concentrated on research into the medicinal (antimicrobial) properties of essential oils, with particular emphasis on those oils which can be produced from native Australian trees and plants.
